Just woke up-- so how did we do?

Wow. What a week. I just woke up, dug myself out of 400+ emails, and got back to work.

So Racers-- what did you think of the race? Please leave comments so we can make adjustments for next year.

Matt,

What a fun race! I had a blast and I feel like the race did our veterans, and the city of Sea Isle proud. Having it on a Saturday was great so we could party the rest of the weekend!

Overall, I felt like the race was very well organized, the transition was great, and routes were clearly marked.

But since you asked, a few suggestions:

1. sound system down on the beach...it kept breaking up and was hard to hear. I think the swim start could have been a bit more organized. The poor military division went at the du-start got halfway out to the first buoy before realizing it was a "false start" perhaps a guy with a megaphone on the beach would have kept things in check.

2. This is minor...the hop down over the jetty right at the run start was surprising, i almost misjudged it and could have tripped..but i didn't so like i said minor issue.

Thanks for putting together such a great race, great work! I'll definitely be back next year!

Yup. The sound system is an area for improvement for next year. Sadly, I had a megaphone last year, but not this year. Damn! As for the jetties-- its a beach run and we will always have a surprise or two (I am waiting for the race when a beached whale shows up!).

Thank you for the suggestions and I look forward to seeing you in 2010!

Great job! Very well organized.

1. Ditto the sound system comments.

2. The M 39 - under wave was very large and it was tough to get swimming until we got around the first flag. Splitting that leg in half would probably work better.

3. Saturday is the way to go. Don't change the date - I love it.

4. Last, you could have done a better job warming up ocean :-)

I can't wait until next year. When does registration open?

I agree that the race was great. My only complaints are:
1. sound system (already covered)
2. also agree on the allocation among waves. It seemed as if 60% were in the 39U wave
3. this is a big one...there was nobody checking out the bikes! I went and retrieved my bike and gear and walked out of the transition area without anyone checking me out. I could have walked in and grabbed any bike I wanted. This needs to be changed for next year.

Matt,
I really enjoyed the race and overall it was very well-organised.

Agree on the above comments re:
- a megaphone was really needed on the beach for the swim start
- size of the U39 wave - very tough to get going until after the first buoy
- no security in transition at the end, I was also surprised by this and it's a huge problem just waiting to happen. Someone needs to be at the exit matching bike #'s to racer's body #'s.

I'd also suggest using barriers at the finish area to keep the kids back. I love the idea of the kids handing out flags and enlisted not only my kids but 4 of their cousins, but my wife was at the finish line with them and mentioned that there were a lot of close calls with kids clogging the finish chute to hand out flags, and almost getting run over. Maybe if there were boards or orange safety netting, and the kids could just hold out flags for the racers to grab them?

Overall though, you did a great job putting on a fun race for a very worthwhile cause - I'll definitely be back next year.

Matt,

The race was great! I have no complaints. This was my first triathlon and was a perfect race to get my "feet wet." I can't wait to do my next one.

Having the meeting for first timers was a great idea and very informative. Although, you may want to a not so elite athlete, one who is in the middle of the pack, answer questions. His/her comments may be more realistic for first timers.

Since this event is held on Memorial Day weekend and Veterans take part in it, it would be nice to recognize them more. As a Marine mother, I was especially inspired and motivated by the Marines who participated.

Thanks again and keep up the great work!

Matt -- I didn't run the race, but I agree with the comment about the kids at the end. I parked myself at the finish saw a few "almost" run ins. The kids were so anxious to give flags that they almost blocked the runners and left a very narrow passage for them to finish.

Also, the boyfriend got swum over in the U-39 heat for the swim, so I think he'd agree that the number in that group was too big.

Oh, and can you stop idiots in vans from driving the wrong way down a way way street and yelling that she needs to be let through ;-) I think your response was right on ;-)

Matt - great race, sound system and security in the transition area are key. Also, i know its difficult, but the cars parked on the bike route made for some pretty tight lanes in some spots. I know its hard on the first holiday weekend in SIC, but since you asked...

I love that this is on Saturday and i hope this doesn't change. its a great start to the holiday weekend!

lastly - where can i see the pictures form the race? I remember seeing an email with the link, but cant find it. Thanks for running a great event for a great cause!
